DTE (www.dte.ai), a leader in real-time and AI-based predictive metals analytics and intelligence for industry, announced today that it is the recipient of a €2.4 million grant award from the European Innovation Council, with a recommended further equity investment of up to €7 million that can be applied for through the EIC Fund. The fund, created by the European Commission in 2020, aims to provide direct equity investments in breakthrough innovation companies and offer the opportunity for other private investors to co-fund such highly innovative companies. The EIC award builds on a prior EU funding of €1.4 Million as a Horizon 2020 award received by DTE in 2018.

Our first-in-industry solution generates real time compositional data and intelligent process decision support from liquid metals, contributing to EU competitiveness, accelerating materials innovation, and helping energy intensive industries to decarbonize. This grant will enable us to advance our solution for aluminium smelter potrooms where we have already demonstrated the ability enhance predictive maintenance, with the potential to save billions of dollars per year in avoidable costs.”
IREAS™, DTE’s Intelligent Real-Time Elemental Analysis System is the first on-market solution replacing manual sampling of cooled solid samples with autonomous reference grade composi-tional analytics in real time from high temperature metal. Based on DTE’s proprietary LB-LIBS™ technology, IREAS uses laser induced breakdown spectroscopy to reads the precise composition of the liquid metal surface. It reduces the wait time for compositional data from hours to seconds, enabling this data to be incorporated in real time and predictive process control, while improving the safety of human operators by distancing them from the hot metal.

The EIC is Europe’s flagship innovation programme to identify, develop and scale up break-through technologies and game changing innovations. The European Innovation Council (EIC) has been established under the EU Horizon Europe programme. It has a budget of €10.1 billion to support game changing innovations throughout the lifecycle, from early-stage research to proof of concept, technology transfer, and the financing and scale up of start-ups and SMEs. The strategy and implementation of the EIC is steered by the EIC Board, which has independent members appointed from the world of innovation (entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, corporates and others from the innovation ecosystem). The EIC takes a proactive approach to managing funding under the leadership of EIC Programme Managers who develop visions for innovation and technology breakthroughs and steer portfolios of projects to achieve these goals.

Arni Blöndal is a Co-Founder and serves as a managing partner at Brunnur Ventures GP. Arni has two decades experience with start-ups and private equity; as a start-up co-founder, a venture capital fund manager, an investment banker and a fund general partner. He has done transactions and managed private equity/venture capital investments in over 10 countries. Arni has served as board director in numerous start-ups.
He is a mechanical engineer from the University of Iceland and holds a M.Sc. degree in engineering from Denmark’s Technical University.
Clemens Blum, is a Director of the Board of DTE, effective from October 22, 2021. He currently serves as Board Member of the Buhler Group, RAFI GmbH & Co. KG and Laird Connectivity. He is also a strategic advisor for Advent International and Oaktree Capital.
Clemens spent over 17 years at Schneider Electric, where he was the Industry Business Unit’s EVP between 2010 and 2016. In this role he led a global organization of over 15,000 people researching, defining, developing, manufacturing, selling and supporting industrial automation products, solutions and services.
Clemens holds a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Furtwangen University, and a Business, Management and Marketing degree from Pforzheim University.

Tomas Sigurdsson has served as a Director of DTE since April 2021. He currently serves as the CEO of HS Orka, Iceland’s leading private renewable energy company. He was formerly Chief Operating Officer and President of Alcoa, responsible for the daily operations of global assets of the Company’s Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium segments and a member of the Alcoa Executive Team, setting strategic direction for the Company. He co-ordinated the activities of nearly 50 locations across Europe and was accountable for Alcoa’s smelters and refinery in Iceland, Italy, Norway and Spain. Prior to this he was Managing Director of Alcoa Iceland.
Tomas was the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in Iceland, has served on the board of Federation of Industries and was also a member of the Executive Committees of the European Aluminium Association, Eurometaux, and the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union.
A graduate of the University of Iceland, Tomas has a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering and a master’s degree in planning from Cornell University,
